The Source of Our Thanksgiving (Philippians 4:4-9, Isaiah 12:1-6)

Rev. William L. BarronRev. William L. Barron, November 3, 2019
Part of the Morning Worship at North Greenville Church series, preached at a Sunday Morning service

In Philippians, Paul reminds us that we are to have the mindset of always rejoicing in the Lord and being a people of giving thanks. The Lord is the source of all we have and thanksgiving comes from knowing Him. Remember that the Lord is near and we need not be anxious, but always be in prayer and have a mind of thankfulness. With joy we will draw water from the wells of our salvation.

Philippians 4:4–9 (Listen)

Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, rejoice. Let your reasonableness be known to everyone. The Lord is at hand; do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things. What you have learned and received and heard and seen in me—practice these things, and the God of peace will be with you.

Isaiah 12 (Listen)

12:1   You will say in that day:
  “I will give thanks to you, O LORD,
    for though you were angry with me,
  your anger turned away,
    that you might comfort me.
  “Behold, God is my salvation;
    I will trust, and will not be afraid;
  for the LORD GOD is my strength and my song,
    and he has become my salvation.”

With joy you will draw water from the wells of salvation. And you will say in that day:

  “Give thanks to the LORD,
    call upon his name,
  make known his deeds among the peoples,
    proclaim that his name is exalted.
  “Sing praises to the LORD, for he has done gloriously;
    let this be made known in all the earth.
  Shout, and sing for joy, O inhabitant of Zion,
    for great in your midst is the Holy One of Israel.”
