Everything In Subjection To Christ (Hebrews 2:5-18, Psalm 8:1-9)

Rev. William L. BarronRev. William L. Barron, August 1, 2021
Part of the Morning Worship at North Greenville Church series, preached at a Sunday Morning service

What God has done in creating man. What is man's place? David felt very small in the face of the evening sky. Hebrews gives us a New Testament interpretation of the Old Testament. David praises God for what He has done in creating man. God created man in His own image. David asks, Why? God created man to rule over His creation. Man disobeyed and fell from holiness. We are to reflect God's glory to the world to bring honor to Him. How can we reflect God's glory? We can't do it in our own strength. Nebuchadnezzar is an example of this failure. He boasted of his accomplishment and was punished by taking on the nature of a cow. Man fell, and it affects all of creation. David in Psalm 8 is looking ahead to Jesus Christ, as all the Old Testament does. We are to put our trust in Jesus, not the old ways. The world considers man to be basically good. With enough education, the world says, everything in life will be fine. We trust science to heal people and ensure long life. We consider wealth redistribution to eradicate poverty. None of these can change the heart. The only way to peace is through Christ. He came to us to walk among us, suffer and die for us. God raised Him up and exalted Him. He is still mediating over this fallen world until He returns as righteous judge.

Hebrews 2:5–18 (Listen)

For it was not to angels that God subjected the world to come, of which we are speaking. It has been testified somewhere,

  “What is man, that you are mindful of him,
    or the son of man, that you care for him?
  You made him for a little while lower than the angels;
    you have crowned him with glory and honor,
    putting everything in subjection under his feet.”

Now in putting everything in subjection to him, he left nothing outside his control. At present, we do not yet see everything in subjection to him. But we see him who for a little while was made lower than the angels, namely Jesus, crowned with glory and honor because of the suffering of death, so that by the grace of God he might taste death for everyone.

10 For it was fitting that he, for whom and by whom all things exist, in bringing many sons to glory, should make the founder of their salvation perfect through suffering. 11 For he who sanctifies and those who are sanctified all have one source. That is why he is not ashamed to call them brothers, 12 saying,

  “I will tell of your name to my brothers;
    in the midst of the congregation I will sing your praise.”

13 And again,

  “I will put my trust in him.”

And again,

  “Behold, I and the children God has given me.”

14 Since therefore the children share in flesh and blood, he himself likewise partook of the same things, that through death he might destroy the one who has the power of death, that is, the devil, 15 and deliver all those who through fear of death were subject to lifelong slavery. 16 For surely it is not angels that he helps, but he helps the offspring of Abraham. 17 Therefore he had to be made like his brothers in every respect, so that he might become a merciful and faithful high priest in the service of God, to make propitiation for the sins of the people. 18 For because he himself has suffered when tempted, he is able to help those who are being tempted.

Psalm 8 (Listen)

To the choirmaster: according to The Gittith. A Psalm of David.

8:1   O LORD, our Lord,
    how majestic is your name in all the earth!
  You have set your glory above the heavens.
    Out of the mouth of babies and infants,
  you have established strength because of your foes,
    to still the enemy and the avenger.
  When I look at your heavens, the work of your fingers,
    the moon and the stars, which you have set in place,
  what is man that you are mindful of him,
    and the son of man that you care for him?
  Yet you have made him a little lower than the heavenly beings
    and crowned him with glory and honor.
  You have given him dominion over the works of your hands;
    you have put all things under his feet,
  all sheep and oxen,
    and also the beasts of the field,
  the birds of the heavens, and the fish of the sea,
    whatever passes along the paths of the seas.
  O LORD, our Lord,
    how majestic is your name in all the earth!
