Hosanna To The Meek (Mark 11:1-11, Zechariah 9:1-10)

Rev. William L. BarronRev. William L. Barron, April 10, 2022
Part of the Morning Worship at North Greenville Church series, preached at a Sunday Morning service

Jesus had set His face toward Jerusalem from Galilee. He taught along the way. His discipled probably thought He was foolish to go there. His purpose was to be the sacrificial lamb that had been foreshadowed by the Passover, with the shed blood of the paschal lamb spread over the lintel and the doorposts so that the death angel would pass by. In Bethpage, His disciples were to borrow a colt or donkey that had been placed there by God, one that had never been used for a secular purpose. This was to carry Jesus during His triumphal entry. All this was foretold by the prophet Zechariah. God had prepared the land of Judah over centuries for this very moment. Alexander the Great had brought Greek culture to the region, and Greek had become the common language. The Romans had come next, and built a network of roads that improved travel and communication and would aid the spread of the Gospel. Now was the time for the coming of the deliverer who would establish the Kingdom of God. Jesus would purify the temple from earthly, sinful use and restore it as a house of prayer, ushering in peace with God. Are we trusting in Him as the bringer of peace with God?

Mark 11:1–11 (Listen)

11:1 Now when they drew near to Jerusalem, to Bethphage and Bethany, at the Mount of Olives, Jesus sent two of his disciples and said to them, “Go into the village in front of you, and immediately as you enter it you will find a colt tied, on which no one has ever sat. Untie it and bring it. If anyone says to you, ‘Why are you doing this?’ say, ‘The Lord has need of it and will send it back here immediately.’” And they went away and found a colt tied at a door outside in the street, and they untied it. And some of those standing there said to them, “What are you doing, untying the colt?” And they told them what Jesus had said, and they let them go. And they brought the colt to Jesus and threw their cloaks on it, and he sat on it. And many spread their cloaks on the road, and others spread leafy branches that they had cut from the fields. And those who went before and those who followed were shouting, “Hosanna! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord! 10 Blessed is the coming kingdom of our father David! Hosanna in the highest!”

11 And he entered Jerusalem and went into the temple. And when he had looked around at everything, as it was already late, he went out to Bethany with the twelve.

Zechariah 9:1–10 (Listen)

9:1   The oracle of the word of the LORD is against the land of Hadrach
    and Damascus is its resting place.
  For the LORD has an eye on mankind
    and on all the tribes of Israel,
  and on Hamath also, which borders on it,
    Tyre and Sidon, though they are very wise.
  Tyre has built herself a rampart
    and heaped up silver like dust,
    and fine gold like the mud of the streets.
  But behold, the Lord will strip her of her possessions
    and strike down her power on the sea,
    and she shall be devoured by fire.
  Ashkelon shall see it, and be afraid;
    Gaza too, and shall writhe in anguish;
    Ekron also, because its hopes are confounded.
  The king shall perish from Gaza;
    Ashkelon shall be uninhabited;
  a mixed people shall dwell in Ashdod,
    and I will cut off the pride of Philistia.
  I will take away its blood from its mouth,
    and its abominations from between its teeth;
  it too shall be a remnant for our God;
    it shall be like a clan in Judah,
    and Ekron shall be like the Jebusites.
  Then I will encamp at my house as a guard,
    so that none shall march to and fro;
  no oppressor shall again march over them,
    for now I see with my own eyes.

  Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion!
    Shout aloud, O daughter of Jerusalem!
  Behold, your king is coming to you;
    righteous and having salvation is he,
  humble and mounted on a donkey,
    on a colt, the foal of a donkey.
10   I will cut off the chariot from Ephraim
    and the war horse from Jerusalem;
  and the battle bow shall be cut off,
    and he shall speak peace to the nations;
  his rule shall be from sea to sea,
    and from the River to the ends of the earth.
