What Sort Of King Is The King Of Glory? (Psalm 24:1-10, Revelation 20:11-21:5)

Rev. William L. BarronRev. William L. Barron, December 10, 2023
Part of the Advent Series: Christ Coming To Build His Church series, preached at a Sunday Morning service

Psalm 24 is getting the people ready for the coming of the king. King David who came will return in the fulfilled person of King Jesus. In the Apostles' Creed, we testify that Jesus will come again in judgment of the world. He is the King of Glory and has the world in His hands. All governments are under His control. Creation is a focus of our praise; creation praises God. Jesus is the "glue" that holds all things together. In vss. 3-6, we see that we are called to be holy, set apart. We must be single-minded toward God. We must have clean hands, including purity in our thought life. We need to be living for God. We must not be filled with falsehood. We trust in Jesus and the Word of God alone, and not borrow on doctrines of other faiths. We must not be deceitful, rather people of integrity. We must ask ourselves if we live up to these four requirements. The answer brings us back to the cross in confession. The scripture teaches us how to live (2 Timothy 3: 16). God will bless those who seek Him, as He blessed Jacob (vs. 6). We must hold on to God and trust Him; he is YHWH, a warrior for His people.

Psalm 24 (Listen)

A Psalm of David.

24:1   The earth is the LORD’s and the fullness thereof,
the world and those who dwell therein,
for he has founded it upon the seas
and established it upon the rivers.
Who shall ascend the hill of the LORD?
And who shall stand in his holy place?
He who has clean hands and a pure heart,
who does not lift up his soul to what is false
    and does not swear deceitfully.
He will receive blessing from the LORD
and righteousness from the God of his salvation.
Such is the generation of those who seek him,
who seek the face of the God of Jacob. Selah
Lift up your heads, O gates!
And be lifted up, O ancient doors,
that the King of glory may come in.
Who is this King of glory?
    The LORD, strong and mighty,
    the LORD, mighty in battle!
Lift up your heads, O gates!
And lift them up, O ancient doors,
that the King of glory may come in.
10   Who is this King of glory?
    The LORD of hosts,
he is the King of glory! Selah

Revelation 20:11–21:5 (Listen)

11 Then I saw a great white throne and him who was seated on it. From his presence earth and sky fled away, and no place was found for them. 12 And I saw the dead, great and small, standing before the throne, and books were opened. Then another book was opened, which is the book of life. And the dead were judged by what was written in the books, according to what they had done. 13 And the sea gave up the dead who were in it, Death and Hades gave up the dead who were in them, and they were judged, each one of them, according to what they had done. 14 Then Death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire. This is the second death, the lake of fire. 15 And if anyone’s name was not found written in the book of life, he was thrown into the lake of fire.

21:1 Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and the sea was no more. And I saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, “Behold, the dwelling place of God is with man. He will dwell with them, and they will be his people, and God himself will be with them as their God. He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away.”

And he who was seated on the throne said, “Behold, I am making all things new.” Also he said, “Write this down, for these words are trustworthy and true.”
