Picking The Right Tool For The Job (1 John 2:15-17)

Rev. Alan Avera, March 19, 2017
Part of the Morning Worship at North Greenville Church series, preached at a Sunday Morning service

There are two basic focuses of love available to us: love for God or love for the world. As Christians, we are called to turn from the worldly life to the heavenly life. How do we do this? Thomas Chalmers preached about "the expulsive power of a new affection." Pursuing idols crowds out our love for God. Our own willpower simply leaves a vacuum that will be filled. Our hearts are made to love; they cannot be empty. Only the love of God keeps love of the world out of us.

1 John 2:15–17 (Listen)

15 Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. 16 For all that is in the world—the desires of the flesh and the desires of the eyes and pride of life—is not from the Father but is from the world. 17 And the world is passing away along with its desires, but whoever does the will of God abides forever.
