Exchanging the Truth for a Lie (Romans 1:18-23)

Rev. David HuffmanRev. David Huffman, June 30, 2024
Part of the Series On Romans series, preached at a Sunday Morning service

God's wrath is holy revulsion against what is a contradiction to His holiness. Holiness is the sum of all God's other perfections, knowledge and love. He is free from all moral impurity. (Robert Shaw). He is glorious in holiness. Sin is rebellion against God, a denial of His glory and rejection of His commandments. Every human sinner who denies and suppresses the truth is under God's wrath. How can we escape this? Through God's Good News. God's wrath comes both presently and in the future. All people are without excuse, because (vs. 19) God has given all knowledge about Himself. It is plain to them. In the mind and heart of every human is knowledge that God exists; it is plain. His power and divine nature He has made known. Creation is His fingerprint that He has spoken. How can something invisible be easily perceived? We see in our minds through what God has made. "God made this," and its corollary "God made us." Also, we perceive His eternal power and His divine nature. Time and space are created by God, who is self-existent. Only by Him can creation come to pass, from nothing. "Let there be..." is the currency of creation. Creation displays God's divine nature; that He is good and wise. In God's commmon grace, His law is written on our hearts. Even rebellious sinners experience God's goodness by general revelation. Calvin says we all have a sense of the divine implanted within us. Why then are there agnostics? In vs. 21, the answer is that they do not honor God, and they become futile in their thinking. Greatness and majesty characterize His work. Psalm 96 directs us to ascribe to Him the glory due His name. The natural man does not do this. The natural man does not thank God for all things, or any things. How can mankind say, "There is no God?" It is the power of sin in our lives. the rebellious hide from the power of God. They go to sleep forgetting their God. The prospect of a God is terrifying to them. Instead of wise, they are fools (vs. 21). The faithful give over time, money and idols for the worship of the one true God. Either God or something else will command our allegiance, and something else leads to ultimate destruction. Those who turn to God enjoy the blessings and joy of the one true God.

Romans 1:18–23 (Listen)

18 For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who by their unrighteousness suppress the truth. 19 For what can be known about God is plain to them, because God has shown it to them. 20 For his invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made. So they are without excuse. 21 For although they knew God, they did not honor him as God or give thanks to him, but they became futile in their thinking, and their foolish hearts were darkened. 22 Claiming to be wise, they became fools, 23 and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images resembling mortal man and birds and animals and creeping things.
