In Christ Alone (Romans 3:21-26)

Rev. David HuffmanRev. David Huffman, September 8, 2024
Part of the Series On Romans series, preached at a Sunday Morning service

In the medieval days, the Roman church had distorted the gospel. The reformers realized this and studied the Bible in the original languages and rediscovered the true gospel. In time they declared the Five Solas of the Reformation: sola scriptura, sola gratia, sola fide, sola Christus and sola deo gloria. This was the heart of reformation preaching and teaching. There is always a need for the church to keep reforming to hold fast to and restore its understanding of the true gospel. No one can be declared righteous in the sight of God in and of themselves. We sin in the past and we go on sinning. Getting the gospel right is really important. The righteousness of God comes to us by faith in Christ alone. So how can unrighteous people be righteous in the sight of God? God does it in His Son by justification, redemption and propitiation. Propitiation refers to Christ becoming like us to satisfy the debt of our sin for us (Heb. 13: 11-12 ) through blood sacrifice. The cross has become the mercy seat. Propitiation means satisfaction. The debt of sin is satisfied on the cross. God's wrath and anger is satisfied, diverted from us to Christ. This wrath cannot be appeased by anyone else. 1 John 4: 10 defines the love of God for sinners, done in Christ. This brings peace with God, where before we were enemies. Redemption is the language of slavery emancipated. This points to the Passover. Christ the paschal lamb on the cross releases us from bondage to sin. Galatians 3: 13 speaks of the curse of the law removed by Christ paying the ransom to God for the redemption of our souls. He give us an everlasting inheritance in heaven. We do not have to succumb to the old ways, because we have been purchased with a price. Christ is all-sufficient to answer all our needs. He can save to the uttermost.

Romans 3:21–26 (Listen)

21 But now the righteousness of God has been manifested apart from the law, although the Law and the Prophets bear witness to it—22 the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ for all who believe. For there is no distinction: 23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, 24 and are justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus, 25 whom God put forward as a propitiation by his blood, to be received by faith. This was to show God’s righteousness, because in his divine forbearance he had passed over former sins. 26 It was to show his righteousness at the present time, so that he might be just and the justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus.
