The Coming Of The King (Psalm 24:1-10)

Rev. William L. BarronRev. William L. Barron, December 3, 2017
Part of the Morning Worship at North Greenville Church series, preached at a Sunday Morning service

The timing of this Psalm is not known. It serves as an alert to the whole creation, especially to the rebellious. Do we say, "I believe in God, but..." is he really in control of these events? There is a difference between the words founded and established. The former refers to creation from nothing. The latter refers to ongoing, sustaining control. Contrary to the second law of thermodynamics, God's control confers a stability that is not natural; an order that is the work of God. Hebrews refers to creation being upheld by the word of His power. Colossians states that in Him, all things hold together. This is true of our lives also. Those who ascend the hill are those who obey God's law; not just what you show on the outside, but also who you are internally. You don't deny God or lie to yourself; you are spiritually in communion with God. You attain this by God's grace; salvation is of the Lord. Only those who are under grace will seek. They are like Jacob, who sought God's blessing. We see this God in Christ, who is the King of Glory.

Psalm 24 (Listen)

A Psalm of David.

24:1   The earth is the LORD’s and the fullness thereof,
the world and those who dwell therein,
for he has founded it upon the seas
and established it upon the rivers.
Who shall ascend the hill of the LORD?
And who shall stand in his holy place?
He who has clean hands and a pure heart,
who does not lift up his soul to what is false
    and does not swear deceitfully.
He will receive blessing from the LORD
and righteousness from the God of his salvation.
Such is the generation of those who seek him,
who seek the face of the God of Jacob. Selah
Lift up your heads, O gates!
And be lifted up, O ancient doors,
that the King of glory may come in.
Who is this King of glory?
    The LORD, strong and mighty,
    the LORD, mighty in battle!
Lift up your heads, O gates!
And lift them up, O ancient doors,
that the King of glory may come in.
10   Who is this King of glory?
    The LORD of hosts,
he is the King of glory! Selah
